Heather’s Holistic Health was built Green

A green building is a structure that is designed, built, renovated, and operated, in an ecological -efficient manner. Green buildings are designed to protect occupant health and to use energy, water, and other resources more efficiently; by reducing the overall impact to the environment. A green building may cost more up front, but saves through lower operating costs. Heathers largest green project comes from the forest to our floors, installing all cork flooring from the Cork Oak Tree. Cork is gently removed from the tree without affecting the health of the tree. This process is repeated every 9 years, conserving our precious natural resources, our trees. The only carpet will be installed in our stairways and entrance and is constructed from recycled plastic soda bottles. Carpets are like huge sinks that attract and harbor dirt, dust, mold, mildew, and other possible allergens. Limiting carpets is especially helpful to people with asthma, allergies or other respiratory problems.

Heathers primary goal is the creation of a healthy building. We are using all Low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints and glues. Regular paints may contain harmful chemicals, dried pesticides and poisonous heavy metals which can affects indoor air quality for months or even years and is especially dangerous to young children and chemically sensitive individuals. Glues are used to adhere plywood and drywall in place. The glues used are extremely toxic, many containing formaldehyde.  We are using 50 gallons of Low VOC paint and 72 tubes of low VOC glue.

Our building is designed to be energy efficient, with 2 x 6 construction for extra insulation, high performance windows, high efficient heating systems, and windows to provide natural lighting. Heathers are also big fans of using recycled materials, such as paper towels and copy paper. Our new facility will also have a small recycle bin. Early demolition earned more than $1,000.00 by recycling materials such as aluminum and steel.
